Maokeng Mall

When Maokeng Mall being developed by GMI Property Group in the west of Kroonstad opens in August 2020, it will bring modern retail into the very heart of the Maokeng community for the first time. Situated just over 200km north of Bloemfontein, Kroonstad is a rich agricultural area bordering the N1, and while it has a strong retail offering, it cannot provide the convenience and sense of community which the new mall will offer the township of Maokeng.

With the aim of containing the current outflow of Maokeng residents to the Kroonstad CBD and even as far afield as Welkom for certain higher order purchases, the first-phase 10,800m² mall will be a one-stop shopping destination for more than 21,000 households clustered in Koekoe Village, Gelukwaarts, Constantia, Phomolong and Seiso Village.

The selected location of the mall on Smaldeel Road, which runs directly through the township, is a strong one. It will ensure easy access to convenient retail for the more than 80,000 residents – many of whom are below 40 years of age – living in this lower income community.

A strong line-up of national retailers is confirmed to anchor the single- level centre. Shoprite with Shoprite Liquor will head up the supermarket offering, supported by a bouquet of national fashion retailers which includes Pep, Clothing Junction, Power Fashion Factory, with convenient ATM services by Std Bank, ABSA FNB and Capitec. Fish & Chips Co, together with OBC Chicken add to the food offering that will be available at the Mall. Cashbuild, the leading retailer of building material and associated products, will provide a superbly positioned service to home builders and improvers, contractors, small farmers and traders living or working in the area.
